“I feel like taking the Getting Ahead Class saved my life. I was in a really dark place in my life when I entered the program. Getting Ahead helped me get out of the survival mindset and the negative thinking that kept me so down. It helped me start thinking and living joyfully and improved my emotional and mental health. It also helped me improve my overall life skills. I began to discover my own value. I am now a community activist and I get involved whenever I can and whenever I am called upon. I built a lot of healthy relationships with my classmates and we still keep in touch. It helped me fill my life with healthy friends and supports. I have achieved all my goals I set in class and have set even higher goals for myself now. I no longer procrastinate or isolate. My life has truly changed since taking Getting Ahead; it was the beginning of a new, healthy and happy me.
What would I tell people that are interested in the program? I would tell them that they will never be the same after taking this class. It teaches you so many things and can really help you achieve your goals in life. Do it for yourself!!!! You won’t regret it!!!”
“Before I took Getting Ahead, I was really struggling in my life. I had a lot of negative people in my life that kept me down. I couldn’t seem to get anywhere, no matter how hard I tried. I went to Community Action to get help with going back to school. My education coach suggested that I take the Getting Ahead class. I’m a really shy person, so taking a class was really scary. I’m so glad I listened to her though! Getting Ahead has changed my life!!!
I learned to stop listening to the negative people. I started doing positive things for myself and my family. I have learned to make my own decisions in my life. I know that I can better myself and I don’t need the negative people in my life. I have started picking more positive people to have in my life. I have started to use different agencies and workers to help me achieve my goals.
Now I’m doing good. I start opening up to people about different things in my life and found out that by sharing things with healthy people, they could help support me. After taking Getting Ahead, I got the support I needed to get back into college. One of my goals is to go back to school, and I have reached that goal! I was awarded the Ordean Grant for Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide at Lake Superior College. I made a lot of healthy friendships and found lots of support. I even joined Big View Leadership Team. Now, I’m talking to more people and helping them learn how to get out of poverty.
I am so thankful for Getting Ahead. The class helped me understand what poverty is all about and gave me hope for the future.
Before Getting Ahead, I was terrified of speaking in public. I had a lot of support at the Solutions Presentation and was able to get up and speak in front of a whole room of people. I was able to overcome fear and now I speak at a lot of public events with the Big View Leadership Team!!”
“Before taking Getting Ahead, I was struggling every day just to get by. I felt like I was so busy struggling just to provide that I didn’t even have the time to figure out how to improve my life or my family's situation. I was always angry, worn down and crabby. I felt hopeless and alone. My friend convinced me to take the class. She promised me that I had nothing to lose. I am thankful every moment of every day that I listened to her. Getting Ahead opened my eyes and changed my life. I learned so much about myself, my relationships and the world around me. Because of Getting Ahead, I was able to figure out a plan to improve my situation. I was able to achieve my work goals. When I started class I was balancing four jobs and still living paycheck to paycheck. Now I have one good paying job and have started going to college. I have become a more positive person. I have healthier and closer relationships with my children, family and friends. And I no longer have negative people influencing me and pulling me down. Getting Ahead helped me change from struggling everyday and fearing tomorrow, to embracing tomorrow, being in control of my life and future, and tackling any problem that comes my way.”
